World over, screen has been a prominent technology that enables us to interact with devices and share information. Screenless display as next-generation interface technology is fast gaining traction. The new technology enables us to project images onto our retina, open space and even directly to our brain. The trend is gaining prominence led by the miniaturization of various devices such as wearables and holographic display. Google Glass was one of the first screenless display and its adoption over the years created a great impact on recent shaping the market trends. Constant miniaturization of the technology has led to major technological advancements by top players that shapes up the competitive landscape scenario. Recently, this month, Samsung taking the advantage of miniaturization feature, have incorporated the screenless display technology by embedding it in a contact lens. The OLED display technology would enable the projection of images directly on the wearer’s eye, and as the patent application filed by the company suggests, the contact lens would offer an image quality better than offered by Google Glass. However, as industry experts opine, the product would lead to considerable privacy issues as it can detect where the person was looking at.
Another segment in screenless display market that needs mention is heads up display also known as transparent displays; these find immense applications in aeroplanes, automobiles and computer games and many others. Using the devices enable the users to do away with the need for changing their current focus because the information is displayed on the windshield. The technology helps in creating and manipulating the images up to any size. Recently, a new head-up display conceptualized for passenger vehicles was conceptualized at Cambridge University. The display will be used in passenger vehicles such as Jaguar Land Rover vehicles to project information as speed, direction and navigation on the windscreen without the driver eliminating the focus form the road. This technology already tested on humans and many prominent companies started developing this technology in sectors such as education, organization and different security systems.
As per a recent report by Allied Market Research titled “World Screenless Display Market Opportunities and Forecast, 2014 – 2020”. As per the report, the world screenless display market is estimated to generate revenue of $5.7 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 29.9% during the forecast period, 2015–2020. Geographically, in 2014, North America contributed the maximum revenue; however, Asia-Pacific would witness the fastest growth during the forecast period.
